African and African-American Studies is an interdisciplinary program that was started in 1990. Euginia Herbert was chair of the program for the first year 1990/91, and Satya Gabriel chaired the program the next year, 1991/92 until 1994/95. The purpose of the program is to study and analyze the origins and experiences of people of African descent. The program spans a wide range of fields in the humanities, social sciences, and performing arts.
The African and African-American Studies records contain the program's annual report from 1992-1993. This report includes an evaluation of Lucas Wilson, an appointed member of the program, and information on curriculum, enrollments, and activities. The information on curriculum states that the program would like to develop new courses, but cannot because of their limitation in staff. The information on enrollment lists the number of students in each class, as well as the number of majors in the program. Activities described in the records include Black History Month, an African Film Series, and a lecture series.
