Historical Note

The Merrill Prize for Significant Progress in Freshman English was established in 1925 by Bessie Merrill. Her daughter Lorma (Mclean) Marshall was a professor in the English Department at Mount Holyoke College from 1923-1925. The prizes are awarded annually to freshman chosen by the English Department. Initially, the prizes were funded by Merrill's donation to the College. Once those funds were exhausted, Lorma Marshall assumed the task of sponsoring prizes.
