Papers contain letters, journal, and an information sheet from the Mount Holyoke Alumnae Association.  Primarily documenting her academic career and her association to Mount Holyoke.   </abstract>

         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>Ellen Porter French was born in Cummington, Massachusetts, on December 29, 1834.  She attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary and graduated in 1857.  She also attended Oberlin College and graduated from there in 1860.  After finishing her education she taught in Granville, Ohio, Plainville, Connecticut, Westford and New York, and was Principal of Chatham Academy in Chatham, New York, from 1867-1878.  French died in Cummington, Massachusetts in 1916.</p>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>The Ellen Porter French Papers include: an information sheet from the Mount Holyoke College Alumnae Association dated 1915; a letter to French's aunt, Sophia L. Porter, dated October 10, 1854 regarding academics and life at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary; a greeting note to the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, Class of 1857, dated 1915; and an obituary, dated 1916.  Also included is a two-volume religious journal which primarily discusses devotional and prayer meetings, but also includes notes on art history and Old Testament history.  These journals are dated 1856-1857.</p>
