Historical Note

The 66 Green Street rooming house was a lesbian-only residence located in
Northampton, Massachusetts, circa 1975 to 1992. The house had a live- in manager, but was
run in a cooperative spirit, rotating cleaning chores and some residents sharing in the
preparation of meals. A notebook was always kept in the central hallway for residents to
write messages to each other. In 1992 the building was sold and became a co-ed rooming
house.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The collection consists of house logbooks including announcements, phone messages,
minutes of occasional house meetings, and personal messages between residents. The entries
are revealing of the women's personal lives, daily life in the rooming house, and the
Northampton lesbian community. In the January 1983 book, there is some discussion pertaining
to the murder of a resident outside of Northampton, by another resident who was since
incarcerated at Bridgewater State Mental Hospital.
