       <p>Helen Lincoln Appleton Read graduated from Smith College, 1908; studied at the Art
Student's League, 1908-1911; Art critic for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, 1922-1938; Associate
Art Editor for Vogue, 1925-1930; Director of Art Alliance of America, 1924-1929; Lecturer at
the Whitney Museum, 1933-?; Director in 1943 and President from 1957 to 1973 of Portraits,
Incorporated, a New York City gallery.  Awarded Smith College Medal, 1968.</p>

      <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
       <p>The collection consists of six scrapbooks including brochures and calendars produced by Portraits, Incorporated, New York City, 1962-1971; plus one letter, and miscellaneous clippings.  The brochures and calendars prove examples the work of portrait painters (in black and white).</p>
