<p>The Afro-American Studies Department at Smith College was established in 1970. Smith was one of the first colleges to establish an Afro-American Studies department.</p>

<head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
<p>The Afro-American Studies Department records contain materials describing the offerings and activities of the department. Types of materials include various photographs of faculty as well as original copies of student literary magazines, Afro-American Studies at Smith pamphlets, department announcements, minutes from the Committee on Afro-American Studies, paper assignments, exam questions, and one copy of the <title render="italic">Smith College Journal of Afro-American Studies</title>.</p>
