         <head>Historical Note</head>
         <p>The Advisory Committee on Affirmative Action advises the President and the college administration, bringing to the attention of the College opinions and suggestions regarding the provisions of the College's Affirmative Action Program. In carrying out its mission, the Committee has authority to solicit opinion from and issue reports to the College community. The Committee is composed of faculty members and staff and others, under the leadership of the Affirmative Action Officer. The Affirmative Action Advisory Committee has subcommittees on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues; diversity educators; women, work and family issues; sexual harassment; and the committee on collegiality.</p>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>Minutes, reports, correspondence, printed material and other records documenting the Advisory Committee on Affirmative Action and its role in helping Amherst College carry out the provisions of its Affirmative Action program, 1972-1997, addressing issues such as harassment and discrimination, workforce diversity, and work and family issues.  The records include a number of statistical summaries based on workforce analysis as well as information about various campus events sponsored by the committee.</p>
