Some committees are formal standing committees, but the majority are ad-hoc temporary bodies often convened as presidential advisory committees or task forces. In many cases, files contain only final reports (sometimes both interim and final reports), rather than supporting documents related to the committee's work in producing those reports. (This more detailed supporting documentation can sometimes be found elsewhere in the Archives; see "Related Material" or consult an archivist.)

Organization of the Collection

This collection is organized into two series:

UNRESTRICTED COMMITTEE RECORDS, 1826-2006 RESTRICTED COMMITTEE RECORDS, 1832-2010

The records are organized alphabetically by the main heading or topic associated with each committee. Generic descriptors such as "Committee on…" and "Task Force on…" are omitted. For example, "Committee on Area Studies" would be filed under "Area Studies, Committee, on."

Parts of this collection comprise administrative records with access restrictions. In such cases, requests for permission should be directed to the Head of Archives and Special Collections. In addition, particularly fragile items may be restricted for preservation purposes.
