English Amherst College Archives and Special Collections Leaflets, posters, and bumper stickers used by the United Farm Workers in various strikes and boycotts held in California throughout the 1970s. Historical Note The National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) was founded in 1962 by César E. Chávez and other Mexican-American community activists in Delano, California. In 1966, the NFWA merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) to form the United Farm Workers of America, the first successful and largest effort ever to organize agricultural laborers in the United States. Envisioned by Chávez as both a union and a civil rights movement, the UFW has always been committed to the use of non-violent tactics - such as boycotts, strikes and legal action – in its fight to win basic labor rights to its constituency. Since Chávez's death in 1993, the union has been presided over by Arturo Rodriguez. Scope and Contents of the Collection The collection contains leaflets, posters, and bumper stickers used by the United Farm Workers in various strikes and boycotts held in California throughout the 1970s.
