The collection consists of 60 letters, all but one from Pease to Amherst College treasurer and author Tuckerman, dealing chiefly with the natural history of the White Mountains and Appalachian Range. Arthur Stanley Pease was a classical scholar who was also an avid amateur botanist. Born in 1881, he received his AB, AM and PhD degrees in classics from Harvard in 1902, 1903 and 1905 respectively. He taught classics at Harvard University (1906-1909), the University of Illinois (1909-1924), and Amherst College (1924-1927). In 1927 he was appointed President of Amherst College. He resigned five years later and returned to teaching classics at Harvard, from 1932 to 1950. Pease died Jan. 7, 1964.

Frederick Tuckerman, M.D. (b. 1857), a native of Greenfield, Mass., was graduated from Boston University in 1878 and Harvard Medical School in 1882. He was Lecturer on Anatomy and Physiology at Massachusetts Agricultural College, 1884-1886. He was the author of numerous scientific articles as well as Amherst Academy: a New England School of the Past, 1814-1861 (1929). He was the son of the poet Frederick Goddard Tuckerman and nephew of Professor Edward Tuckerman.

 Scope and Contents of the Collection

The collection consists of 60 letters and postcards, all but one from Arthur Pease to Frederick Tuckerman, dealing chiefly with the natural history and historical background of the White Mountains and the Appalachian Range.
