         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>William Gooding Hartin (1874-1969) was a member of the Amherst College Class of 1909.  After graduation he was the principal and district superintendent of schools, Burlington, Vermont, a representative for D. Appleton &amp; Co., and a manufacturer of gloves and mittens in Gloversville, New York.</p>

         <p>The William Gooding Hartin (AC 1909) Student Papers consist of essays written for classics courses and English literature courses at Amherst College, 1907-1909.  Papers written for Amherst College debate teams are also included.  Three articles that may have been written later in Hartin's life are included in the final folder.</p>
