         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>Ercole Cartotto (1889-1946), Italian-born portraitist, is noted chiefly for his portraits of U.S. President Calvin Coolidge in the 1920s. Cartotto studied art at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.</p>

      <scopecontent id="scope">
         <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>19 framed portraits of Amherst College alumni, faculty and administrators.  The works were commissioned by President Stanley King (11th President, 1932-1946) for display in the Babbott Room of the Octagon, where the faculty held their meetings for many years.  Sometime in the 1970s the works were featured in an exhibition entitled "Personages from the Past of Amherst College," in the Mead Art Museum.</p>
