Records of the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, established in 1876, date from 1876-present. Records consist of historical sketches and notes, fliers, catalogues, clippings, agendas, correspondence, membership lists, minutes of meetings, information about facilities and collections, annual reports, Art Museum Director Steering Committee Records photographs, slides, Art Advisory Committee Records, financial records, and the records of exhibits and other events. Historical Note

The Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, one of the oldest collegiate art museums in the country, was founded in 1876. The original building was built in 1902 and was called the Dwight Art Memorial. In 1970, it moved its present site. 1978/79 was the first year of fiscal autonomy for the Art Museum.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The records of the Art Museum contain historical sketches and notes, fliers, catalogues, clippings, agendas, correspondence, membership lists, minutes of meetings, information about facilities and collections, annual reports (1973-1990), Art Museum Director Steering Committee Records (1982-present), photographs of the building and exhibits, slides of works of art, Art Advisory Committee Records (1964-present), financial records (1912-present), and the records of exhibits and other events (1895-present). The records document the history and day-to-day operation of the Museum including information on finances, pictures and catalogues of collections owned by the Museum and of exhibits sponsored by the Museum, and director searches.

Records restricted to use by office/department of origin for 25 years from date of record creation.
