         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>Ellen Deborah Ellis was born on November 25, 1878 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  She attended Philadelphia public schools and graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1901.  She received an A.M. in 1902, and a Ph.D. in 1905, both from Bryn Mawr.  In 1905 she began teaching Economics and Political Science at Mount Holyoke College.  She became chair of the Political Science Department in 1939, and she retired in 1944.  She wrote many books and articles for various journals and magazines.  Ellen Deborah Ellis died on December 20, 1974, in Wallingford, Pennsylvania.</p>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>The Ellen Deborah Ellis Papers contain correspondence 1896-1972; writings 1905-62; financial records 1896-1962; passports 1902-46; grade records 1888-1907; student papers 1897-1904; awards 1897-1905, 1960; biographical information; and photographs.  The correspondence deals with her student years at Bryn Mawr, and her time as a faculty member at Mount Holyoke.  The writings include articles, speeches and book reviews.  The student papers contain notebooks, programs and certificates.  The biographical material includes newspaper clippings and biographical sketches.</p>
