BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTE

The Friends Temperance Union of New York was a Quaker organization founded in 1876, which promoted abstinence from all alcohol. It lobbied State and federal officials to research the injurious effects of liquor consumption and to banish its sale. Prominent members, primarily from New York City, included Joseph A. Bogardus, Rachel W. Underhill, Thomas E. Skinner, George T. Capron, Jacob Capron, Jonah L. Rees, William M. Jackson, Anna Rice Powell, and Aaron M. Powell. Aaron Powell edited the National Temperance Advocate from 1873-1894 and in 1878 helped convince the New York State Board of Education to adopt a school text on the effects of alcohol. The Friends Temperance Union of New York ceased to meet after 5mo 1898, and remaining funds were disbursed in 1905.

In 1879, New York Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) appointed a Joint Committee on the Subject of Intemperance to coordinate temperance work in Quaker meetings; many of the representatives to the NYYM Committee from Westbury (New York) Quarter were also members of the Friends Temperance Union.
