Martin Stanton was born in 1897 in Horseshoe, New Jersey, the son of Irish born parents. Following graduating as a member of St. Peter's Prep final graduating class, he entered the Immaculate Conception Seminary, and was ordained a priest in Newark. After being a parish priest in Newark and Summit, he obtained his doctorate in philosophy and sacred theology from Fordham University. Fr. Stanton was elevated to the rank of papal chamberlain in 1949, then to bishop in 1957. Bishop Stanton served a number of different organizations, including the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, of which he was the archdiocesan director, the Associated Catholic Charities, and the Advocate, of which he was a charter member. He also attended all sessions of the Second Vatican Council in Rome. Bishop Stanton retired in 1972 and died 1 October 1977.

The Martin W. Stanton papers include letters to and from Bishop Stanton to other clergy members, invitations to events, and several letters to Bishop Stanton regarding his election to the Episcopacy by Pope Pius XII. Most of the documents are congratulatory letters and notices. Some correspondence was received by Bishop Stanton during his time in Rome for the first session of the Second Vatican Council. Several documents relate to the death of Bishop Stanton's sister, Sr. Mary Martina, including condolences from faculty of Seton Hall University.
Materials were transferred to the Archives and Special Collections Center from the Archdiocese of Newark via St. Aedan Church, Jersey City. Accession number 2012.005.
