<bioghist altrender="biography" encodinganalog="545" id="a2">

Historical Note

The Patricia Martin Post Vatican II AV Collection documents an era of educational outreach to laity through AV productions designed for school, library or home use. This is best exemplified by the Franciscan Communications Center of Los Angeles, California who developed mixed media products in the 1970's for evangelization and to address social issues such as aging or liberation theology. These could be enjoyed on simple playback equipment and were frequently accompanied by pamphlets to provide a rich context to the topic at hand. The advent of digital media has since supplanted the need for large box sets requiring multiple playback devices but these "kits" were effective tools for group instruction or fellowship. The materials in the collection were among a number of AV items used as research for a 1998 PBS documentary "Reflections on Vatican II."

<scopecontent encodinganalog="520" id="a3">

Scope and Contents

This small collection is housed in two boxes that contain samples of the TeleKetics Media produced by the Franciscan Communications Center as well as 3 foreign film reels produced in Italy and India. The TeleKetics materials are in their original packaging. They are distinctive for they emphasize a multi-media "experience" which, for communications purposes, represents a marked departure from the simple public service reels popular in the 50's and 60's. Fr. Anthony Scannell, well-known in Catholic media circles, was president of Franciscan Communications and is credited on the TeleKetics Resources. Less is known about the foreign films, the most visible of which is an Italian production about the famous Capuchin Friar, Padre Pio Da Pietrelcina. The Indian film documents the St Vincent's Colony in Calicut circa 1975.
