The Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary, United States Branch (ESBVM/USA) was formed in 1976 in the Washington, D.C. area. The society was modeled after the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founded in 1967 in the United Kingdom. The idea for establishing a United States Branch was realized by Monsignor John J. Murphy, who attended an ESBVM meeting in Birmingham, England in 1975. In collaboration with a steering committee of eight clergymen, the first assembly was held on April 29, 1976. As a result of the second meeting held on October 23, 1976, the title and goals of the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the United Kingdom were adopted. The first officers were elected at the fourth meeting, held on November 5, 1977. They included William Cardinal Baum (Honorary President), Dr. Donald Dawe (President), Msgr. John J. Murphy, Fr. George DeTrana, Dr. Reginald Fuller (Vice Presidents), and Msgr. Eugene G. Bilski (Secretary/Treasurer).

The society exists to advance the study of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Church, under Christ and to promote ecumenical devotion, with prayer, study, and fellowship as core activities. Their aim is to show that, in the Blessed Virgin Mary, Christians of many traditions may find a focus in their search for unity.

The society hosts bi-annual meetings, traditionally held in the spring and fall, at which formal papers on Marian and ecumenical topics are given and discussed. The society is Registered Charity # 282748.

 Scope and Contents

This collection documents the activities and history of the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary, United States Branch (ESBVM/USA). It contains the organizational records of the society including newsletters, membership and mailing lists, meeting minutes, agendas, constitution, financial records, correspondence, pamphlets, conference papers, newspaper clippings, prayers, periodicals, photographs, and multimedia including tape, cassette, and diskettes. The audio materials in this collection are recordings of ESBVM/USA conference speakers.

The collection also includes 1 box of newsletters, pamphlets, and promotional materials relating to the International Ecumenical Conference and the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary, United Kingdom.
