Biographical Note

Karl M. Schmitt was born on July 22, 1922 and was raised in Louisville, KY. He entered CUA in the Fall of 1940 and demonstrated an academic interest in Latin American Studies. He was mentored by Professor Manoel Cardozo. Schmitt pursued extracurricular activities in theater and acted in three plays, before entering the World War II draft in February 1943. He served in the United States Army until September 1945. Re-enrolling at CUA upon his discharge, Schmitt took an interest in student government and was elected as President of the Baltimore Washington Chapter of the National Federation of Catholic College Students during his senior year.

Graduating from The Catholic University of America in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts in History, he went on to obtain an M.A. from CUA in 1949. Dr. Schmitt then pursued a distinguished teaching career as a history and government professor. After earning his doctorate from University of Pennsylvania in 1954, Dr. Schmitt worked for the U.S. Department of State in the mid-1950s. He joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in 1958 where he spent the majority of his career. He is the author of several books on Latin American studies. Dr. Schmitt is currently retired.

Scope and Contents

The material in this collection was donated to The Catholic University of America by Dr. Karl M. Schmitt in 1999. The photograph series in this collection documents the pre-World War II and post-World War II periods on campus. Roughly half of the photographs are taken of Schmitt's freshman and sophomore years on campus. His friends and classmates are identified among the many outdoor group photos. Most are dated and include scenes evoking the war years leading up to his decision to enlist in the United States Army. The post war images are also campus scenes, largely of nursing school students.

Series 1 consists of 48 small, assorted black and white vintage prints (2"x3", 3"x5", and 5"x7"). Series 2 consists of an unpublished manuscript documenting Dr. Schmitt's CUA experience.
