BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL

Elbert Russell (1871-1951) was a Quaker teacher, historian, and
writer. His was a leading voice in bringing the insights of liberal, British
Friends on the primacy of revelation and the importance of scholarship in the
renewal of faith into American Quakerism. Russell accepted the pastoral system
but was opposed to the revivals of the holiness movement. Starting iin 1895, he was a professor of Bible at
Earlham College, where he also served as chaplain. He resigned his
position in 1915 after his proposal to strengthen the Quaker nature of the
college, by building a large meeting house on campus for both students and the
yearly meeting, was rejected. He later taught at Johns Hopkins, then became
Dean at Duke University.
