<bioghist>
<head>BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTE</head>
<p>The Fund is a memorial to Martha Schofield who founded a school for African-American youth in 1868 at Aiken, SC. The school became known as the Schofield Normal and Industrial School and continued for 82 years. In 1950 it was transferred to the Aiken City Board of Education. The Scholarship Fund was started in 1954.</p>
<p>The awards for scholarship are restricted to students who have attended Aiken County, South Carolina, schools and the Martha Schofield Junior High School.</p>
<p>Sanford P. Bradby (1900-1978) had been principal of the Schofield School from 1930-1935 and was chairman of the Schofield Scholarship Fund Committee. His wife succeeded him after his death.</p>
<p>James H. Young of Wilmington, DE, was President of the Board of Trustees.</p>
